Participant Observer

Welcome this month's edition of the San Diego Participant Observer newsletter!

Special Announcement: One of our favorite organizations is Hands of Peace. Their programs "empower American, Israeli and Palestinian youth to become agents of change." Hands of Peace are currently recruiting host families and volunteers for their flagship summer program, happening in person from July 6 - 25 in North County. Visit their webpage at https://handsofpeace.org/summer-program to learn more about the program and discover how you, or someone you know, can get involved!

Our recipe of the month is for Bánh Mì Gà Nướng sandwiches. If you ever had one of these Vietnamese culinary delights, you know how magnificently tasty they are. We show you how to make them at home. The weather is getting warmer, and Bánh Mì would be great for a picnic!

Our book of the month selection is the Pulitzer Prize winning novel The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead. The novel is a follow-up to Whitehead's equally acclaimed The Underground Railroad. The Nickel Boys is based on the real story of the Dozier School, a notoriously brutal reform school in Florida. NPR book critic, Maureen Corrigan, said of The Nickel Boys "A masterpiece squared, rooted in history and American mythology and, yet, painfully topical in its visions of justice and mercy erratically denied . . . a great American novel."

Our international music selection for this month is The Eternal Return by the Bulgarian group Irfan. This transcultural fusion album features ethereal vocals and choruses, extensive use of traditional instruments, and song inspired on a wide range of traditional folk styles and motifs.

With the Covid pandemic subsiding somewhat (all due caution still seems prudent), there are many more live cross-cultural events to report on this week.

Bánh Mì Gà Nướng Vietnamese Sandwich

Our recipe of the month is for Bánh Mì Gà Nướng. Some people believe that Bánh mì are the sandwiches to end all sandwiches. We agree! Combining fresh and pickled vegetables with grilled chicken, Bánh mì gà nướng sandwiches make a light, fresh-tasting and very satisfying lunch.

The Participant Observer Book of the Month selection is The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead.

In this Pulitzer Prize-winning follow-up to The Underground Railroad, Colson Whitehead brilliantly dramatizes another strand of American history through the story of two boys unjustly sentenced to a hellish reform school in Jim Crow-era Florida.
